Esther 2:8

Posted on 18 May at 15:21
Listen to this article

“So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.”

Esther 2:8 is part of the narrative in the Book of Esther, which tells the story of a Jewish girl named Esther who becomes the queen of Persia and plays a crucial role in the deliverance of her people from destruction. To understand this verse in its broader context, let’s explore the background and significance of Esther’s journey to the king’s house.

Historical Context:The events in the Book of Esther take place during the reign of King Ahasuerus (also known as Xerxes I), who ruled over the Persian Empire from 486-465 BC. At this time, the Jewish people were scattered throughout the Persian Empire, and the story of Esther provides insights into their experiences.

  • The King’s Commandment:

In the preceding verses, we learn that King Ahasuerus issued a decree to find a new queen after he had banished his previous queen, Vashti. The king’s commandment stated that beautiful young virgins were to be gathered from all the provinces of the empire and brought to the palace in Shushan.

Esther’s Selection:Esther, whose Hebrew name was Hadassah, was among the many young women who were brought to the palace to undergo a year-long preparation process. This process involved beauty treatments and special preparations under the custody of Hegai, the keeper of the women.

The Role of Hegai:Hegai was responsible for overseeing the women who were brought to the palace, ensuring their well-being and preparing them for potential selection as the next queen. He played a significant role in Esther’s life, as he was the one who brought her into the king’s house.

Esther’s Placement:Esther was brought into the king’s house and placed under the care of Hegai. This was a pivotal moment in her journey, as it positioned her for an opportunity to be considered as the next queen. Unbeknownst to anyone at that time, Esther’s rise to power would ultimately play a crucial role in the salvation of her people.

God’s Providence:Throughout the Book of Esther, although the name of God is not explicitly mentioned, His providence and sovereignty are evident. The events that unfold in Esther’s life and the timing of her placement in the king’s house are not mere coincidences but part of God’s plan to bring about deliverance for the Jewish people.

Overall, Esther 2:8 highlights the beginning of Esther’s journey as she enters the king’s house under the care of Hegai. It sets the stage for the subsequent events that unfold, leading to her becoming the queen and positioning her to fulfill her destiny in saving her people. This verse invites us to recognize the hand of God in Esther’s life and the unfolding of His providential plan.
