Esther 5:7

Then answered Esther, and said, My petition, and my request is, Esther 5:7 (KJV)

The book of Esther is set during the Persian Empire when the Jews were living in exile. Esther, a Jewish woman, became queen of Persia through a series of events that display God’s providence. In this passage she prepares to approach King Ahasuerus to make a petition on behalf of her people.

Esther’s boldness is striking. She had been hesitant to appear before the king without being summoned, knowing that such an act could have cost her life. Yet the urgency of Haman’s plot to exterminate the Jews compelled her to act, and her statement, “My petition and my request is,” reveals her determination to intercede despite the danger.

Her words also highlight the importance of prayer and petition. Esther knows she has a specific request before the king, and believers can learn from her example the value of bringing our own concerns before God. Philippians 4:6 reminds us to be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to God.

The power of intercession is evident in Esther’s willingness to stand in the gap for her people. As Christians we are likewise called to intercede for others through fervent prayer. James 5:16 affirms that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much,” encouraging us to follow Esther’s courageous example.

Esther’s actions also reflect deep trust in God’s providence. She recognized that the fate of her people rested in God’s hands and stepped out in faith. Likewise, believers are invited to trust in God’s sovereignty, seeking His guidance and direction in every circumstance.

Application of this passage challenges us to be bold in our faith and to stand up for what is right, even when the stakes are high. It reminds us that God can use ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes when they are willing to act in faith and submit to His will.

In conclusion, Esther 5:7 captures Esther’s determination to approach the king with her petition for her people. Her example encourages us to trust God’s providence, be fervent in prayer, and boldly intercede for others. May we be inspired by her faith and willingness to act, confident that God is always at work for the good of His people.
