Esther 6:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:14
Listen to this article

“On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.”

Historical Context:The book of Esther is set during the time when the Jewish people were living in exile in Persia. Esther, a Jewish orphan, becomes queen to King Ahasuerus (also known as Xerxes I). This verse takes place at a critical moment in the story when God’s providence and divine intervention are about to be revealed.

Sleeplessness of the King:The verse begins by stating that on that particular night, King Ahasuerus could not sleep. This detail might seem insignificant, but it becomes crucial for the unfolding of events. God orchestrates the circumstances, including the king’s sleeplessness, to set the stage for His divine plan to be revealed.

The Book of Records:In his sleeplessness, the king commands the book of records of the chronicles to be brought before him. These records were a historical account of events and happenings within the kingdom, often used to remind the king of significant incidents or to make important decisions based on past occurrences.

Divine Timing and God’s Providence:It is essential to recognize that God’s timing and providence are at work throughout this story. It is no coincidence that the king’s sleeplessness occurs precisely at this moment. God’s divine intervention is about to unfold, leading to the deliverance of the Jewish people from a plot to annihilate them.

Foreshadowing:This verse serves as a foreshadowing of the events to come. The reading of the chronicles from the book sets the stage for the subsequent events where Mordecai’s role in saving the king’s life is brought to light. This discovery plays a pivotal role in the development of the story and the downfall of Haman, who had planned to exterminate the Jews.
