Esther 6:5

Listen to this article

“And the king’s servants said unto him, Behold, Haman standeth in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.”

Context:The Book of Esther tells the story of a Jewish girl named Esther who becomes queen of Persia and saves her people from a plot to exterminate them. In Esther 6, we find a crucial turning point in the narrative. King Ahasuerus, also known as Xerxes I, is unable to sleep and requests to have the book of records read to him.

Recognition of Haman:In this verse, the king’s servants inform him that Haman, one of his trusted officials, is standing in the court. Haman plays a significant role in the plot against the Jews, as he had convinced the king to issue a decree to annihilate them.

Divine Timing:The fact that Haman is mentioned at this moment is not a coincidence but rather a divinely orchestrated event. The timing is crucial because, unbeknownst to Haman, the king is about to honor Mordecai, a Jew whom Haman despises. This incident sets the stage for a dramatic turn of events in the subsequent chapters.

Suspense and Irony:The narrative creates suspense as Haman awaits the king’s decision on how to honor him. Little does Haman know that his downfall is imminent. The irony lies in the contrast between Haman’s expectation of honor and the humiliation he will soon experience.

God’s Sovereignty:Throughout the book of Esther, we see God’s providential hand at work, even though His name is not explicitly mentioned. The events that unfold reveal how God can use ordinary circumstances and individuals to fulfill His purposes.
