Esther 7:3
Then Esther the Queene answered, and said; If I haue found fauour in thy sight, O King, and if it please the King, let my life be giuen me at my petition, and my people at my request. Esther 7:3 (KJV)
The book of Esther is set during the time when the Jews were in captivity under the Persian Empire. Esther, a Jewish woman, becomes queen of Persia after winning a royal beauty contest. Haman, an influential official in the king’s court, plots to annihilate the Jewish people, but Esther, guided by her cousin Mordecai, takes a courageous stand to save her people.
In this verse we hear Esther’s response to King Ahasuerus’ inquiry about her request. She first acknowledges her dependence on the king’s favor, saying, “If I have found favour in thy sight, O king,” which shows her humility and awareness that her petition rests on his goodwill. She then adds, “If it please the king,” emphasizing the importance of his consent and reinforcing her respectful approach. Finally, she boldly declares, “Let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request,” revealing a two‑fold plea: first for her own life, indicating the grave danger she faces, and second for the king’s intervention to save the Jews from impending genocide.
Esther’s boldness illustrates the power of intercession. By risking her own life to advocate for her people, she becomes an instrument of mercy and justice before the throne, teaching us the value of interceding for others in times of crisis.
She also models trusting God’s favor. Although she seeks the king’s approval, she recognizes that true favor ultimately comes from God. Believers can likewise trust in God’s providence, seeking His favor and believing He can open doors for deliverance.
Esther’s willingness to speak up against the plotted injustice demonstrates courage in the face of adversity. Her example encourages us to stand for what is right, even when circumstances are daunting.
Throughout Esther we see God’s sovereignty working behind the scenes. The timing of Esther’s revelation of Haman’s plot reflects God’s perfect timing, showing that He can use human actions to accomplish His purposes.
Application of this passage calls us to be courageous advocates for justice and righteousness, both for ourselves and for others. We should approach God with our petitions, seeking His favor and trusting in His sovereignty, just as Esther did, becoming instruments of God’s deliverance in our world.
