The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province
was published unto all people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies. Esther 8:13 (KJV)
The Book of Esther records how a Jewish woman, Esther, became queen of Persia under King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I). Her cousin Mordecai, who raised her, uncovered a plot to annihilate the Jews throughout the empire. At great personal risk Esther approached the king to intercede for her people, and through a series of events the Jews were saved from destruction.
In Esther 8:13 we encounter a decisive moment. After Haman, the high‑ranking official who plotted against the Jews, is exposed and executed, Esther and Mordecai receive authority to issue a counter‑decree. This decree grants the Jews the right to defend themselves against their enemies on the appointed day of attack.
The king’s scribes wrote a copy of the decree and sent it to every province of the Persian Empire. The proclamation was made public throughout the empire—”the king’s drinking‑waters made public unto all the provinces according to the edict of the king”—so that all peoples were aware that the affairs of the Jews were declared a matter of life and death.
The Jews were instructed to be ready on that designated day. Their readiness was meant for self‑defense and protection, not for vengeance. The language of the decree emphasizes survival and the right to stand for their lives against those who would harm them.
Throughout the narrative God’s providential hand is evident. Esther’s courage and her position as queen were not mere coincidences but part of a divine plan that brought about the salvation of His people. This reminds believers that even in perilous circumstances God can use ordinary individuals for extraordinary purposes.
The call for the Jews to be prepared serves as a reminder of the need for both spiritual and practical vigilance. As believers we are urged to be spiritually equipped and ready to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy.
The story also illustrates God’s faithfulness. Despite the dire threat, God provided a way for deliverance, encouraging us to trust in His steadfast love amid trials and tribulations.
Finally, the downfall of Haman underscores the consequences of wicked intentions. Those who plot harm against others often become ensnared by their own schemes, a sobering truth affirmed by the events recorded in Esther.
