Exodus 10:23
They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
Exodus 10:23 (KJV)
Context
Exodus is the second book of the Bible and tells of Israel’s liberation from slavery in Egypt. This verse describes the ninth plague, which God sent because Pharaoh refused to release the Israelites. The darkness covered Egypt for three days. It was not ordinary night but a thick, palpable darkness that even extinguished fires, lamps, and candles. The Egyptians could not see one another or rise from their places. This total immobility and isolation showed the severity of God’s judgment.
Meaning
The contrast between darkness and light carries deep meaning. Darkness often represents sin, ignorance, and spiritual blindness, while light represents truth, righteousness, and the presence of God. The Israelites had light in their dwellings while darkness covered the Egyptians, symbolizing God’s protection and favor. This was not because they had better sources of light, but because God sovereignly provided light for His people in the midst of the darkness.
The plague also demonstrated God’s sovereignty over creation. He controlled natural elements to accomplish His purposes. The darkness was a judgment against Egypt, highlighting God’s authority and role as ultimate judge. It directly challenged Egyptian gods, especially Ra, the sun god, showing that the God of Israel is supreme over all.
Biblical connections
This event foreshadows Israel’s deliverance, as God was preparing to lead them out with a mighty hand. The light God provided points to the spiritual illumination and guidance He gives His people. Even in times of darkness and chaos, God’s light shines to provide direction, comfort, and protection. Believers, as children of God, are called to walk in the light and reflect His glory.
Application
Trust in God’s protection: Just as God protected Israel during the plague, we can trust Him in times of trouble. No matter how dark the situation, God’s light will guide and sustain us. Have faith in His promises and seek refuge in Him.
Walk in the light: As followers of Christ, we are called to live according to God’s truth. The contrast between Israel and Egypt reminds us of the distinction between believers and the world. Let God’s light shine through us, dispelling darkness and reflecting His love, grace, and righteousness.
Seek spiritual illumination: Just as Israel had light in their dwellings, we should seek spiritual illumination through prayer, reading the Bible, and deepening our relationship with God. As we draw near to Him, He reveals His truth, wisdom, and guidance, enabling us to navigate the darkness of this world.
Reflection
Exodus 10:23 highlights the contrast between darkness and light, symbolizing God’s protection, intervention, and spiritual illumination. It reminds us to trust in God’s guidance, walk in the light, and seek spiritual illumination. God is able to provide light and guidance even in the darkest circumstances, and His people are set apart for His purposes. This truth encourages believers to rely on Him as the source of true light in a world darkened by sin.
