Exodus 12:6
And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
Exodus 12:6 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of the Passover, the final plague God sent upon Egypt. On the tenth day of the month, each Israelite family chose a lamb or goat. They kept it until the fourteenth day, then killed it in the evening. This waiting period tested their obedience and showed that the sacrifice was deliberate, not hurried. The animal was kept in their houses, set apart for God’s purpose.
Meaning
The command to keep the animal for four days set it apart as holy. The whole assembly of Israel acted together, showing that the Passover was a community event, not a private one. The evening sacrifice pointed to the deliverance that would come through the blood applied to the doorposts. The phrase “in the evening” in Hebrew means “between the two evenings,” a time of transition and expectation.
Biblical connections
The lamb foreshadows Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who was sacrificed for the sins of the world. Just as the Israelites were spared by the blood of the lamb, believers are saved through the blood of Christ. The timing also connects to the New Testament, where Jesus died at the time of the Passover feast. The preservation of the lamb for four days reminds us of Christ’s life, kept and prepared for the appointed hour of His suffering.
Application
This verse teaches the importance of preparation and community in worship. Believers today can examine their own hearts before coming to the Lord, remembering that salvation is a shared journey. The obedience of Israel reminds us that following God’s instructions brings protection and blessing. We are called to wait on God’s timing, not rush ahead, and to act together as one body.
Reflection
Consider the seriousness of the Passover. The lamb was not killed in haste but after careful waiting. In the same way, our faith grows as we wait on God and trust His timing. The unity of Israel in this act challenges us to worship together and support one another in faith. Let us value the preparation and community that God ordains.
