Exodus 14:20
And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.
Exodus 14:20 (KJV)
Context
Exodus 14 tells of Israel’s escape from Egypt and their crossing of the Red Sea. After ten plagues, Pharaoh let the people go, but then he chased them with his army. The Israelites were trapped between the sea and their enemies, with no human way out. In this moment of fear, God acted in a remarkable way.
Meaning
In this verse, the pillar of cloud and fire, which had guided Israel since Exodus 13:21-22, moved between the two camps. To the Egyptians, it became darkness, stopping their pursuit. To Israel, it gave light by night, so the one camp could not come near the other all night. This shows God’s complete control over creation, using one cloud for both judgment and deliverance. The same pillar that led Israel now became a shield. God turned a natural element into a barrier that protected His people and confused their enemies.
Biblical connections
The pillar shows God’s presence, guidance, and protection. It shielded Israel from the desert sun by day and gave light by night. This same God later reveals Himself in Christ, who is a stumbling block to some and a cornerstone to others (1 Peter 2:7-8), and who calls Himself the light of the world (John 8:12). Just as the cloud brought darkness to Egypt and light to Israel, Christ brings judgment to those who reject Him and salvation to those who believe. The dual function of the pillar points to God’s sovereign power to work in opposite ways for different people.
Application
God is with His people in every season, bright or dark. He guides, protects, and provides for our needs. Just as He led Israel, He leads us on our journey of faith. We are invited to trust His presence and rely on His guidance even when the way seems uncertain. When we face opposition, we can remember that God sees our needs and intervenes on our behalf. He often works in ways that confound the enemy, turning what seems like a dead end into a place of deliverance.
Reflection
The Israelites were called to trust that God would deliver them despite impossible obstacles. Likewise, we are urged to place our confidence in God’s faithfulness and power, knowing He can overcome any difficulty we encounter. God is faithful to complete His purposes for His people. He does not abandon us in the night; He gives light and protection. As we look back on His past faithfulness, we can face the future with hope, knowing that the God who parted the sea is the same God who walks with us today.
