Exodus 19:7
And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him.
Exodus 19:7 (KJV)
Context
At this point in Exodus, the Israelites have been delivered from slavery in Egypt by God’s mighty hand and have arrived at Mount Sinai. Here God intends to establish a covenant with them and give them the law. Exodus 19 marks the beginning of this significant encounter, and verse 7 records a crucial step in it.
Meaning
Moses came down from the mount into the camp and called for the elders of the people. These elders were the principal men of the tribes and families of Israel, holding positions of leadership and representing the community. Moses gathered them together and laid before their faces all the words which the Lord had commanded him. The phrase “laid before their faces” indicates that Moses expressed the words in the plainest manner, setting them in the clearest light to their minds and consciences. He did not add to them or take from them, but faithfully transmitted the divine message.
This verse highlights Moses’ role as mediator between God and the people. He received God’s commands and conveyed them accurately, ensuring that the people were informed and involved. His actions demonstrate faithfulness in carrying out God’s instructions and a commitment to clear communication.
Biblical connections
The pattern of faithful mediation seen here continues throughout Scripture. Moses stands as a model of one who speaks God’s words without alteration, a role later fulfilled perfectly by Christ, the mediator of a better covenant (Hebrews 8:6). The elders, as representatives, were responsible for receiving and transmitting God’s word to the community, a principle echoed in the New Testament’s call for leaders to guard and proclaim sound doctrine (Titus 1:9).
Application
Exodus 19:7 teaches the importance of faithful communication, obedience, and reverence when receiving and transmitting God’s word. It reminds us that God desires His people to be well-informed and faithful in adhering to His instructions. It also emphasizes the role of spiritual leaders in guiding and teaching the community, and the responsibility of every believer to handle God’s word accurately.
Reflection
This verse invites us to consider our own response to God’s Word. Do we receive it with reverence and obey it fully? Do we pass it on to others faithfully, without distortion? As Moses laid God’s words before the elders, we are called to let God’s word shape our lives and to share it clearly with those around us.
