Exodus 2:16

Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

Exodus 2:16 (KJV)

Moses has fled Egypt after defending an Israelite slave, and he now rests in Midian. This verse introduces the family he meets there: the priest of Midian and his seven daughters. The daughters have come to a well to draw water and fill troughs for their father’s flock. This was a daily duty that required strength and care, and it was a humble, necessary task.

The title “priest of Midian” points to a man who served as a religious leader among his people. The Hebrew word can also mean “prince” or “ruler,” and some ancient translations use that sense. The man is described as a descendant of Abraham, which may explain his knowledge of the true God, though this is an inference. His daughters’ work shows humility and diligence. Drawing water and filling troughs was demanding labor, yet they performed it faithfully for their family’s livestock.

This meeting at a well echoes earlier patriarchal stories where significant encounters happen at wells. Here, God quietly prepares a refuge for Moses. The priest of Midian is later named Jethro (Exodus 3:1), and his household becomes Moses’ family. The daughters’ service also foreshadows the care and responsibility that will mark Moses’ new life. The setting is a place of refuge after Moses fled Pharaoh, and it is a providential step in his journey.

God often works through ordinary tasks and everyday meetings. The daughters did not know that their routine chore would connect them to the man God would use to deliver Israel. Faithful service in small duties can open doors to larger purposes. Believers can trust that God orders even simple encounters for good. The daughters’ work is a model of responsibility and service in daily life.

This verse invites readers to see divine providence in daily life. The daughters’ diligence and Moses’ arrival at the well were not accidents. God was caring for Moses by giving him a place of safety and a future family. The same God who guided these events remains at work in the lives of His people today.
