Exodus 20:22

And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

Exodus 20:22 (KJV)

This verse comes immediately after the Ten Commandments. God had spoken to Israel from Mount Sinai with thunder, lightning, and a loud trumpet blast (Exodus 19:16-19). Now He gives Moses further words to carry to the people. The message confirms that what they heard was not human tradition but the voice of God Himself.

God tells Moses to say, “Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.” The people were eyewitnesses of divine speech. God, the sovereign Lord of heaven, came down in visible glory and spoke audibly. This shows both His majesty and His grace. He is far above, yet He condescends to communicate with His people. The phrase also establishes the divine origin and authority of the laws that follow.

Moses stands as mediator between God and Israel. God speaks to him, and he faithfully relays the message. This role points forward to Christ, the ultimate Mediator between God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5). The pattern of God speaking through a chosen servant continues throughout Exodus and the rest of Scripture.

Because God’s words carry such authority, believers today should receive Scripture with reverence and obedience. The same God who spoke from Sinai now speaks through His written Word and through Jesus Christ. Hearing from God is a privilege that calls for a response of trust and faithful living.

God still speaks. His voice is not audible from a mountain, but His Word remains living and powerful. Every commandment and promise rests on the same divine authority. Let this verse remind readers to listen carefully, obey gladly, and worship the God who graciously reveals Himself.
