Exodus 22:2
If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.
Exodus 22:2 (KJV)
Context
Exodus is the second book of the Bible. It tells how God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt and led them toward the Promised Land. After that deliverance, God gave Moses laws to govern the community. This verse is part of those covenant laws, given directly to Israel through Moses. It deals with a specific legal case about a thief breaking into a home.
Meaning
The Hebrew phrase behind “breaking up” suggests breaking through a wall or fence, often at night. If a homeowner strikes such a thief and the thief dies, the homeowner is not guilty of bloodshed. “No blood shall be shed for him” means the homeowner is not liable for the death; it is not considered murder. This law recognizes the right to defend one’s home and family. At night, the homeowner cannot easily identify the intruder or judge the threat, so lethal force is excused. This is not a general endorsement of unlimited self-defense; it is a specific ruling within Israel’s theocratic community.
Biblical connections
The very next verse, Exodus 22:3, adds a crucial limit. If the sun has risen, the homeowner is guilty of bloodshed. In daylight, the thief is identifiable and the threat is clearer, so the homeowner should not kill him but seek restitution instead. This distinction shows God’s concern for both protecting life and restraining excessive force. The broader context of Exodus 22 includes laws about restitution and property, showing that God’s law balances justice with mercy. The law also reflects the principle of proportional justice and the sanctity of human life, even for a thief.
Application
This verse teaches that defending one’s home is legitimate, but taking a life is serious and subject to divine and communal scrutiny. It also reflects the value God places on human life, even the life of a thief. As believers, we are called to protect what God has entrusted to us, including our faith, our families, and our spiritual well-being. We are reminded to be vigilant and watchful, safeguarding ourselves from spiritual theft and deception. The law encourages us to preserve life whenever possible and to avoid excessive force. It also points to the need for wisdom in applying legal and ethical principles in our own lives.
Reflection
God’s laws are not arbitrary; they reveal His character. He values both justice and mercy. This verse shows that human laws should reflect His order and care for life. For the Christian reader, it illustrates the moral order God established for His people. It also reminds us that God values life and justice, and that human laws should reflect His character. We can trust that God’s instructions are good and just, even when they address difficult situations.
