Exodus 23:7
Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.
Exodus 23:7 (KJV)
Context
Exodus 23 is part of the covenant laws God gave Israel through Moses after their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. This chapter contains instructions on social justice, personal conduct, and religious observances. Verses 1 through 9 focus on integrity in courts and community life. The verse stands as a direct command about truth, the protection of the innocent, and the certainty of divine justice.
Meaning
The first phrase, “Keep thee far from a false matter,” warns against engaging in falsehood, false testimony, or taking the wrong side of a case. Believers are to stay completely away from deceit, not merely avoid starting it. This calls for honesty and integrity in all dealings, whether in legal settings or daily life.
The second phrase, “The innocent and righteous slay thou not,” prohibits condemning or causing the death of an innocent and righteous person, even if pressured by a majority. It highlights the value of human life and the importance of protecting those who are innocent and upright. God calls His people to preserve and defend the vulnerable, ensuring justice prevails rather than resorting to violence or acting unjustly.
The third phrase, “For I will not justify the wicked,” grounds these commands in God’s own character. He will not acquit or justify the wicked, so human judges must not either. God’s justice is perfect and impartial, and He will hold the guilty accountable. This declaration serves as a warning that the wicked will not escape judgment.
Biblical connections
The surrounding context includes commands against spreading false reports, following a multitude to do evil, showing partiality to the poor, and accepting bribes (Exodus 23:1–3, 6, 8). These verses together form a call to reflect God’s justice in all dealings. The verse reminds us that God Himself is the ultimate judge who will not let the guilty go unpunished.
Application
We can apply the teachings of this verse to our lives in several ways:
Embrace truthfulness: Strive to be honest in all your dealings, avoiding falsehoods and deceitful practices.
Uphold justice: Stand against injustice and defend the rights of the innocent and righteous. Seek to promote fairness and equality in your interactions and society as a whole.
Protect the vulnerable: Be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and extend care and compassion to those who are in need or oppressed.
Trust in God’s justice: Remember that God is the ultimate judge, and He will hold the wicked accountable. Trust in His perfect justice and do not take matters into your own hands.
Reflection
This verse calls us to examine our own hearts. Do we value truth even when it is costly? Do we protect the innocent even when the crowd pressures us otherwise? God’s character is the foundation of all justice. As we align our lives with His standards, we contribute to a more just and righteous society, knowing that He sees all and will judge rightly.
