Exodus 24:17

And the sight of the glory of the Lord was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.

Exodus 24:17 (KJV)

Exodus 24 records the ratification of the covenant between God and Israel at Mount Sinai. Moses had ascended the mountain with Aaron and the seventy elders to receive God’s commandments. The people saw the glory of the Lord as a devouring fire on the mount’s top, a visible sign of God’s presence. This sight was not the fire itself but a brilliant light that appeared like a great blaze, visible from a distance.

The “glory of the Lord” is a radiant, overwhelming light that reveals God’s holiness and power. The comparison to devouring fire shows both awe and consuming nature. In Scripture, fire often symbolizes purification, judgment, and God’s presence, reminding believers that He is holy and not to be approached lightly. The fire’s consuming quality underscores the seriousness of the covenant relationship.

This event prepared Israel for the giving of the Ten Commandments and the laws that would govern their life. The fire on the mountain echoes other moments when God revealed Himself in fire, such as the burning bush, showing His consistent way of displaying His majesty. It also points to the awe that should accompany worship.

For the Israelites, the sight was both frightening and awe-inspiring. It called for reverence and fear, leaving a lasting impression of God’s authority. Today, believers are reminded that God’s holiness demands respect and that His presence is both comforting and serious. This reverence shapes how we approach God in prayer and obedience.

Exodus 24:17 captures the extraordinary sight of God’s glory as devouring fire, symbolizing His power, holiness, and majesty. This moment marked a decisive step in the covenant relationship, urging the people to commit to obeying the commandments that followed. It remains a call to honor God’s holiness in every generation.
