Exodus 24:3
And Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the Lord hath said will we do.
Exodus 24:3 (KJV)
Context
This verse comes from the book of Exodus, which tells how God freed Israel from slavery in Egypt and led them toward the Promised Land. In this chapter, Moses goes up Mount Sinai to receive the Law from God. Earlier, God had given the Ten Commandments and the Book of the Covenant. Now Moses comes down and tells the people all the words of the Lord and all the judgments. His faithful delivery is central to this moment, for he does not hold back any part of God’s message.
Meaning
Moses acts as the mediator between God and Israel. He faithfully relays every word and judgment from God to the people. His role is essential because he brings God’s message exactly as given. The people answer with one voice, saying, “All the words which the LORD hath said will we do.” Their united response shows their collective agreement and submission to God’s authority. They do not pick and choose which commands to follow; they accept all of them. This is a covenant commitment, not just a casual promise, for it binds the whole community to obey God’s will.
Biblical connections
This moment echoes Exodus 19:8, where the people also promised to obey before the Law was given. That earlier promise shows a pattern of covenant commitment. Here, the people again declare their obedience, and this becomes part of the covenant ceremony. Their promise, though sincere, would later be broken. This points to humanity’s need for grace and for a better covenant. It also foreshadows Jesus Christ, who perfectly obeyed God’s law on behalf of His people and serves as the perfect mediator. The people’s failure highlights our need for a mediator who never fails.
Application
Moses teaches us to be faithful messengers of God’s Word. We can share His teachings accurately and completely, without adding or removing anything. The people’s unified response reminds us of the importance of unity and commitment in our faith communities. When we hear God’s Word, we should respond together with wholehearted obedience. Their example also encourages us to keep our promises to God. We should honor our commitments by faithfully following His commandments and living according to His will. This requires hearing God’s word carefully and responding in unity, just as Israel did that day.
Reflection
True obedience flows from a heart changed by God’s Spirit. The Israelites promised to do all the Lord said, but they could not keep that promise perfectly. This shows our own weakness and our need for God’s help. We can trust that Jesus, our perfect mediator, has fulfilled the Law for us. Because of Him, we can approach God with confidence and seek to obey out of gratitude, not fear. Let us respond to God’s Word with humility, asking Him to give us the desire and power to do what He commands. Our obedience is a response to His grace, not a way to earn it.
