Exodus 25:15

The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it.

Exodus 25:15 (KJV)

In Exodus 25, God gives Moses detailed instructions for building the Ark of the Covenant, a sacred chest that would hold the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments and symbolize God’s presence among His people during their wilderness journey. The Ark was to be carried by the Levites whenever Israel moved, and its design included rings and staves for that purpose.

The Ark was a gold-covered wooden chest with rings on its sides, and staves (poles) were to be inserted into these rings for carrying. God’s command that the staves “shall not be taken from it” meant they were to remain permanently in the rings. This was not merely a practical detail; it ensured the Ark was always ready for transport whenever God led the people to move. The staves were the God-ordained means of carrying the Ark, so that no one would touch it directly, emphasizing the holiness of the object and the need for reverence. The permanent placement of the staves also signified a state of perpetual readiness and obedience to God’s direction, underscoring that the worship of God is not static but involves following Him wherever He leads.

The permanent staves also point to the accessibility of God’s presence through the prescribed means. Just as the staves provided a constant, ready way to approach the Ark, Christ is the permanent way to the Father for believers, always accessible and never to be set aside. This connection is drawn from the New Testament teaching that Jesus is the way to God, and it illustrates how the Ark’s design prefigures the permanent access believers have to God through Christ.

  • Obedience and readiness: The staves left in the rings symbolize our need to remain obedient to God’s leading and always be ready to follow Him. As Christians, we should cultivate a willingness to obey God’s instructions and be prepared to move forward when He calls us to a new season or assignment.

  • Trusting in God’s guidance: The Israelites trusted God’s guidance through the wilderness, and the staves in the rings reflected their reliance on Him. We are called to trust in God’s guidance, knowing that He is always with us, leading us in the right direction and providing for our needs.

  • Honoring God’s presence: By keeping the staves in the rings, the Israelites honored the sacredness of the Ark and acknowledged God’s presence. As believers, we honor and revere God’s presence by seeking to live in a manner that pleases Him and by recognizing His constant presence in our daily lives.

Exodus 25:15 teaches us about the staves that were to remain in the rings of the Ark, reminding us of the Israelites’ obedience, readiness, trust, and reverence for God’s presence. Today, we can apply these principles by remaining obedient to God, trusting in His guidance, and honoring His presence in our lives.
