Exodus 25:5
And rams’ skins dyed red, and badgers’ skins, and shittim wood,
Exodus 25:5 (KJV)
Context
God gave Moses these instructions while Israel camped at Mount Sinai. The people had been freed from Egypt and were learning to worship the Lord. This verse lists materials for the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary that traveled with Israel through the wilderness. The tabernacle was the place where God promised to dwell among His people.
Meaning
Rams’ skins dyed red formed a protective outer covering for the tabernacle. The red color calls to mind blood and sacrifice, pointing ahead to the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Badgers’ skins provided another layer of protection. The exact animal is uncertain; some think it was a sea cow or porpoise. Either way, these skins guarded the holy things inside. Shittim wood, also called acacia wood, was valued for its durability and resistance to decay. Builders used it for the tabernacle’s framework and furnishings, giving strength and stability to God’s dwelling place.
Biblical connections
Exodus 26:14 specifies these same skins as coverings for the tent, and Exodus 35:7 lists similar materials for the tabernacle’s construction. The people gave these items freely, showing their willing hearts. The tabernacle itself foreshadows Christ, who “dwelt among us” (John 1:14). The durable wood and protective coverings remind us that God’s presence is both secure and holy.
Application
God accepted ordinary materials offered willingly. He still values a cheerful heart in giving (2 Corinthians 9:7). Our offerings, whether time, money, or talents, should be our best. The care taken in building the tabernacle teaches us to approach worship with reverence and quality, because we serve a holy God.
Reflection
The red dye on the rams’ skins also symbolizes the blood of sacrifices, pointing to Christ’s atonement. The coverings shielded what was sacred, and the wood did not decay. These point to the incorruptible nature of Christ’s kingdom and the protection found in Him. As God dwelt with Israel, He now dwells with believers through His Spirit. Let us honor His presence by offering our best and living with reverence.
