Exodus 26:28

And the middle bar in the midst of the boards shall reach from end to end.

Exodus 26:28 (KJV)

God gave Moses detailed instructions for building the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary for His presence during Israel’s wilderness journey. This verse is part of the plan for the framework of the Tabernacle’s walls. The boards were made of acacia wood and stood upright, forming the structure. The middle bar, along with four other bars on each side, secured the boards together (Exodus 26:26-27).

The middle bar was unique because it was a single, continuous piece reaching from one end to the other. The other bars may have been made of several parts, but this one was whole. This detail shows the precision and thoroughness of God’s instructions. Every part of the Tabernacle was designed for durability and holiness, as it was the dwelling place of God among His people.

The middle bar provided essential support and stability. The Tabernacle had to be dismantled and carried as the Israelites moved. The bar kept the boards firmly joined, making the walls strong enough to stand and travel. This physical function points to a deeper truth: God values order, stability, and completeness in His work.

The bar also symbolizes unity. It ran through the midst of the boards, binding them into one structure. Without it, the walls would be weak and divided. With it, the boards became a single, coherent dwelling place. This unity is not merely practical; it reflects the character of God, who brings His people together as one spiritual house.

The middle bar can be seen as a type of Christ, who holds all things together and unites believers into one spiritual house. In the New Testament, Paul urges believers to be “endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3). Just as the bar gave strength to the Tabernacle, Christ gives strength and coherence to the Church. Our unity is based on our common faith and purpose in Him.

Believers today are called to build their lives on the solid foundation of God’s Word, ensuring that all parts are connected and secure in Him. The middle bar reminds us that unity among Christians strengthens the Church and enables it to fulfill its mission. When we stand together in faith and love, we can withstand challenges and represent Christ effectively.

Consider how the middle bar held the Tabernacle together from end to end. In your own life, what holds you together? Christ is the unifying force that connects every part of your faith. As you remain united with other believers, you reflect God’s glory and fulfill His purposes in the world.
