Exodus 26:29

And thou shalt overlay the boards with gold, and make their rings of gold for places for the bars: and thou shalt overlay the bars with gold.

Exodus 26:29 (KJV)

God gave Moses detailed instructions for building the tabernacle, a portable dwelling place for His presence during Israel’s wilderness journey. This verse focuses on the framework: the boards that formed the walls, the rings that held the bars, and the bars themselves. Every part was to be covered with gold, showing that the entire structure was set apart for God.

The boards were made of acacia wood, a strong desert timber, and were to be overlaid with gold. Gold signified royalty, divinity, and purity, showing the holiness and majesty of God’s dwelling. The rings of gold served as attachment points for the bars, ensuring the structure’s stability. The bars, which connected the boards, were also covered with gold, so every part of the framework was precious and consecrated. This careful design emphasized that God’s presence deserved the highest honor.

This command was later fulfilled in the actual construction, as recorded in Exodus 36:34, where Bezalel overlaid the boards with gold, made gold rings for holders, and overlaid the bars with gold. This shows that God’s instructions were followed exactly, emphasizing the importance of worshiping according to His specific directions. The gold was not merely decorative; it symbolized the divine presence and the high value God placed on dwelling among His people.

The gold overlay teaches us to offer our best and most valuable possessions to God. When we approach Him, we should do so with reverence and a heart willing to give Him our utmost devotion. The careful attention to every detail reminds us that our service to God should be marked by excellence and wholehearted commitment. Just as the tabernacle was built with precision, our lives should reflect careful obedience to God’s Word.

Even the connecting bars, hidden from view, were covered with gold. This reminds us that God values the unseen parts of our lives, not just what others see. He desires that every aspect of our hearts and actions be consecrated to Him, reflecting His holiness in all we do. The hidden bars teach us that God sees and honors the quiet, faithful work that supports the whole.
