Exodus 26:34

And thou shalt put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place.

Exodus 26:34 (KJV)

Exodus records Israel’s journey from slavery in Egypt to meeting God at Mount Sinai. Here God gives Moses detailed instructions for building the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where God would dwell among His people. This verse directs Moses to place the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place, the innermost room of the tabernacle.

The “mercy seat” was a solid gold covering that served as the lid for the Ark of the Covenant. The ark held the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, called the testimony (Exodus 25:21). On the mercy seat stood two cherubim, angelic figures made of gold, facing each other with wings outstretched, overshadowing the seat (Exodus 25:18-20). The placement of the mercy seat above the law shows that mercy is offered in a way that upholds righteousness and satisfies the demands of the law.

The mercy seat was the focal point of God’s presence on earth. It was where God promised to meet with Moses (Exodus 25:22). It stood in the most holy place, and only the high priest could enter there, once a year on the Day of Atonement, to sprinkle the blood of a sacrificial animal on the mercy seat (Leviticus 16:14-15). That blood made atonement for the sins of the people, cleansing them and restoring their relationship with God.

The mercy seat foreshadowed the work of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 9:5-7 draws a parallel between the earthly tabernacle and the heavenly reality. Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice and mediator between God and humanity. His death on the cross fulfilled the Old Testament sacrificial system, providing a way for all people to approach God and receive forgiveness of sins. The cherubim overshadowing the mercy seat also remind us of the angelic beings who guarded the way to the tree of life in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:24), showing that through the mercy seat God opened a way for sinful humanity to come near Him.

This verse teaches that God’s mercy is not separate from His justice. The mercy seat rested upon the law, showing that forgiveness is granted in a way that honors God’s holiness. As believers, we can approach God with confidence because Christ, our mercy seat, has satisfied the demands of the law on our behalf. We no longer need an earthly high priest, for Jesus is our great High Priest who has entered the heavenly sanctuary for us.

The mercy seat was the meeting place between God and humanity, where atonement was made and fellowship was restored. In Christ, we have a permanent meeting place with God. His sacrifice was once for all, and through Him we receive mercy and grace. Let us draw near to God with humble hearts, trusting in the perfect atonement of Jesus, and live in the freedom and forgiveness He provides.
