Exodus 26:35
And thou shalt set the table without the vail, and the candlestick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side.
Exodus 26:35 (KJV)
Context
God gave Moses detailed instructions for building the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary where God’s presence dwelt among Israel in the wilderness. This verse directs the placement of two sacred furnishings inside the Holy Place, the outer chamber separated from the Most Holy Place by the veil.
Meaning
The table, called the Table of Showbread, was made of acacia wood overlaid with gold and held twelve loaves presented before the Lord continually (Exodus 25:23-30). The candlestick, or golden lampstand, was a seven-branched stand of pure gold (Exodus 25:31-40). The command places the table outside the veil, meaning within the Holy Place, on the north side. The lampstand stood opposite it on the south side. This arrangement kept the bread and the light in constant visual relation, signifying that in worship there is both provision and illumination. The priests ministered daily in this outer chamber, tending these items as part of their regular service.
Biblical connections
The fulfillment of this command appears in Exodus 40:22-24, where Moses places the table on the north side and the lampstand on the south side, exactly as instructed. This shows the importance of following God’s precise directions for worship and the order He established for His dwelling place. The careful placement also highlights the distinction between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place, reminding readers of the reverence required when approaching God.
Application
The bread represents God’s provision for His people, and the continually burning lamps represent divine illumination and guidance. Together they remind believers that God supplies both physical and spiritual needs. The deliberate arrangement teaches that worship is not casual; it calls for obedience to God’s revealed order. Just as the table and lampstand faced each other, provision and light belong together in the believer’s walk with God.
Reflection
Consider how God’s presence offers both sustenance and light for daily life. Just as the priests tended these furnishings daily, believers are called to rely on God’s provision and walk in His light, trusting that He orders every detail of worship and life. Let this verse encourage you to honor God’s instructions, knowing that His design for worship is both purposeful and good.
