Exodus 27:5

Listen to this article

And thou shalt put it vnder the compasse of the Altar beneath, that the net may bee euen to the midst of the Altar. Exodus 27:5 (KJV)

Historical Context: Exodus 27 describes the construction of the altar of burnt offering in the tabernacle, an essential component of the worship system God established for the Israelites during their wilderness journey. This verse gives the specific instruction to place a net or grating beneath the altar.

Significance of the Altar of Burnt Offering:

The altar was the focal point of Old Testament worship, where animal sacrifices were offered as a means of atonement and reconciliation between God and His people. These sacrifices prefigure the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for humanity’s redemption.

The Purpose of the Net:

Exodus 27:5 directs that the net be set under the altar so that it holds the wood for the burnt offerings. The net allowed the fire to burn efficiently, kept the wood stable, and prevented it from falling or slipping as the sacrifice was consumed.

Symbolic Meanings:

Although the net’s primary function was practical, the passage also conveys symbolic lessons. Order and Structure are represented by the net’s role in providing stability, reminding believers to establish a firm foundation in worship and spiritual practice. Reverence and Respect are highlighted by the net’s contribution to the holiness of the altar, urging an attitude of awe toward God. Attention to Detail is emphasized by God’s precise instructions, teaching that faithfulness in small matters reflects a heart that honors Him.

Application:

From this passage we draw principles for contemporary worship. We should pursue order in worship by organizing our time, resources, and activities in a way that honors God. Our approach to prayer, study, and service must be marked by reverence and respect for God’s holiness. Finally, we are called to value attention to detail, being faithful even in seemingly minor obligations, knowing that such faithfulness impacts our relationship with God and others.

Remember that while Exodus 27:5 addresses a specific historical and practical matter, its ultimate purpose is to reveal God’s character—His desire for order, reverence, and meticulous obedience—and to encourage us to live in a manner that honors Him.
