Exodus 36:12
Fiftie loopes made he in one curtaine, and fiftie loopes made hee in the edge of the curtaine which was in the coupling of the second: the loopes held one curtaine to another. Exodus 36:12 (KJV)
The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and records the significant events that followed the Israelites’ enslavement in Egypt and their journey toward the Promised Land. In this passage we encounter the detailed account of the construction of the Tabernacle.
The Tabernacle was a portable, tent‑like structure that served as a sacred place of worship and meeting between God and His people. God gave Moses precise instructions concerning its dimensions, materials, and furnishings, and the work was carried out with great precision by skilled craftsmen under the guidance of Bezalel and Oholiab, whom God filled with wisdom and understanding (Exodus 35:30‑35).
In Exodus 36:12 the focus is on the curtains that formed an essential part of the Tabernacle. The curtains were made of fine linen, dyed with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and were crafted with the intricate details prescribed by God.
The verse records that fifty loops were made on one edge of a curtain and fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that was in the coupling of the second. These loops served a functional purpose: they connected and secured the various curtains, allowing them to be joined together into a cohesive and unified whole.
The “coupling of the second” refers to the connection points where individual curtains were joined. These points were designed to ensure that the curtains were properly aligned and securely fastened.
Beyond the practical function, the loops and couplings carry symbolic meaning. They illustrate the importance of unity and fellowship among God’s people, representing the unity of the Israelites as they gathered to worship and seek God together.
In the New Testament we see Jesus Christ as the ultimate unifier who brings all believers together as one body—the Church (Ephesians 4:4‑6). Just as the loops held the curtains together, Christ binds His followers into a single spiritual family, regardless of background or difference.
The Tabernacle itself was a picture of heavenly things (Hebrews 8:5). The beautifully constructed curtains and their perfect alignment symbolize the beauty and perfection of God’s dwelling place, where everything is in harmony with His divine plan.
Application of this verse calls us to value unity, cooperation, and harmonious service within the body of Christ. Each believer has a unique role and gifting, just as each curtain was skillfully crafted. When we come together in love and humility, we form a powerful, unified testimony that reflects the beauty and glory of God’s design for His people.
