Exodus 36:11
And he made loops of blue on the edge of one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling: likewise he made in the uttermost side of another curtain, in the coupling of the second.
Exodus 36:11 (KJV)
Context
After leading Israel out of Egypt, God commanded Moses to build the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where His presence would dwell among the people. Exodus 36 records the actual construction, showing the Israelites carrying out God’s detailed instructions with care.
Meaning
This verse describes how the craftsmen made loops of blue on the edge of one curtain, from the selvedge in the coupling, and likewise on the outer side of another curtain. These loops were added after the curtains were woven, placed on the outermost edges of each set. They were made to correspond with each other so the two sets could be joined with clasps, forming the walls of the Tabernacle.
Biblical connections
The work here fulfills the earlier command in Exodus 26:4, where God instructed Moses to make loops of blue on the edge of one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling. The exact match between command and execution shows Israel’s obedience. Blue was a significant color, often symbolizing the heavenly and divine nature. It also reminded the people of God’s commandments (Numbers 15:38-39), encouraging holy living.
Application
The precision in making matching loops and placing them exactly demonstrates that God cares about details in worship. Every element had to follow His pattern (Exodus 25:9). This teaches us to serve God with care and obedience, giving our best efforts even in small tasks. The joining of the curtains into one dwelling place also pictures the unity of believers, who together form a dwelling place for God’s presence (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). Each person has a role, and cooperation is essential.
Reflection
God’s instructions may seem small, but they carry meaning. The loops of blue connected the curtains, just as love and obedience connect God’s people. As we serve, we can trust that our faithful work, however humble, contributes to something holy.
