Exodus 26:4
And thou shalt make loops of blue upon the edge of the one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling; and likewise shalt thou make in the uttermost edge of another curtain, in the coupling of the second.
Exodus 26:4 (KJV)
Context
God gave Moses detailed instructions for building the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where God’s presence dwelt among Israel during their wilderness journey. This verse is part of those instructions, focusing on the curtains that formed the tabernacle’s walls. The curtains were made of fine twisted linen woven with blue, purple, and scarlet yarns, with cherubim skillfully worked into them (Exodus 26:1). The ten curtains were divided into two sets of five, joined to each other (Exodus 26:3).
Meaning
The loops of blue were not woven into the curtains but were made afterward, placed only at the outer edges of the two large sets, at the selvedge, the finished edge, in the coupling. These loops served as eyelet holes for joining the two sets together. They were paired with fifty gold clasps (Exodus 26:6) to couple the curtains into one tabernacle, making the structure one unified whole. The blue color likely came from a dye derived from a shellfish, symbolizing heavenly or divine origin. The construction details show God’s concern for order, precision, and beauty in worship.
Biblical connections
The careful joining of the curtains illustrates how believers are knit together in love and unity, each part essential to the whole. The tabernacle itself was a shadow of heavenly things, pointing to Christ, who dwelt among us (John 1:14). The loops, though small and seemingly insignificant, were vital for the structural integrity of the tabernacle, reminding us that every detail in God’s service matters. This mirrors the unity of God’s people, who are joined together in Christ.
Application
The attention to detail in the construction of the tabernacle, including the loops of blue, demonstrates God’s desire for order, precision, and beauty in worship. It teaches us the importance of giving our best efforts when it comes to serving and worshiping God. Obedience in small matters is an act of reverence. God gives specific instructions for worship, and following them faithfully honors Him.
Reflection
As the loops joined the curtains into one tabernacle, so believers are joined together in Christ. Each person, like each loop, has a vital place in the body of Christ. The blue loops remind us of the sacredness of our connection to God and to one another. The tabernacle was the place where God met with His people, and its construction foreshadowed the greater redemption in Christ, who is the true tabernacle (Hebrews 9:11).
