Exodus 26:6

And thou shalt make fiftie taches of gold, and couple the curtaines together with the taches: and it shall be one tabernacle. Exodus 26:6 (KJV)

God gives detailed instructions to Moses regarding the construction of the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary that the Israelites carried with them during their journey in the wilderness. This verse directs the making and use of the fastening elements that hold the curtains together.

The term “taches” refers to clasps or fasteners that were to be made of gold. These small, decorative pieces served the practical purpose of connecting the individual curtains, and the use of gold underscores the importance, value, purity, and divinity of the tabernacle as God’s dwelling among His people.

The curtains themselves were made of fine linen, intricately woven with various colors and designs. Whether described as gold taches or as sturdy loops or rings, the fasteners were employed to couple the curtains together, forming a single, cohesive structure.

By coupling the curtains together with these fasteners, the passage teaches the importance of unity and cohesion in God’s dwelling place. The joined curtains symbolize the unity of the people of Israel in their worship and service to God, showing that the various parts of the tabernacle must function as one.

The purpose of this joining is that “it may be one tabernacle,” a holy place set apart for worship, sacrifice, and encountering God’s presence. The emphasis on “one” highlights the uniqueness and exclusivity of the tabernacle, reflecting the oneness of God and the need for the Israelites to approach Him collectively as a community.

Overall, Exodus 26:6 reminds believers of the significance of unity, reverence, and the sacredness of God’s dwelling place. It calls us to value and respect the places and spaces dedicated to worship, and to recognize that our worship and service are most effective when we come together in unity, demonstrating our devotion and commitment to God as a community of believers.
