Exodus 36:19
And he made a covering for the tent of rams’ skins dyed red, and a covering of badgers’ skins above that.
Exodus 36:19 (KJV)
Context
Exodus 36 continues the account of the Tabernacle’s construction, a portable sanctuary that showed God’s presence among Israel in the wilderness. God gave Moses precise instructions on Mount Sinai, and this verse records the completion of the outer coverings exactly as commanded. The earlier instruction in Exodus 26:14 specified the same materials, so this verse marks the people’s faithful obedience.
Meaning
The first covering was made of rams’ skins dyed red. This layer protected the sacred furnishings inside the Tabernacle. The red colour likely points to blood and atonement, reminding Israel that sin required a sacrifice. Above it lay a second covering, called “badgers’ skins” in the KJV. The Hebrew word “tachash” is uncertain; scholars suggest it may refer to a particular animal or to durable leather. This outer layer gave extra protection from dust and rain, and it was not visible from inside, emphasising the hidden glory of God’s dwelling.
Biblical connections
These coverings teach spiritual lessons. They symbolise God’s desire to protect what is holy; as the skins shielded the Tabernacle, God provides a covering of protection for His people (Psalm 91:4). The red rams’ skins point forward to atonement, recalling how animal blood covered sin and foreshadowing Christ’s sacrifice, whose blood cleanses us from all sin (Hebrews 9:22). The Tabernacle itself foreshadows Christ, who “tabernacled” among us (John 1:14). The outer coverings also remind us that God’s presence is both holy and protected, and that His provision endures through every circumstance.
Application
We can appreciate God’s provision and protective care, reflect on the atonement fulfilled in Christ, and approach God with reverence through prayer, worship, and obedience. The precise instructions remind us to obey God’s commands faithfully, even in details that seem mundane. As we draw near to Him, He draws near to us (James 4:8).
Reflection
Consider how God’s presence is both holy and protected. The outer coverings were unseen by most, yet they were essential. In the same way, much of our faithful service may go unnoticed, but it remains valuable to God. Trust that He sees and honours every act of obedience done for Him.
