Exodus 38:4
And he made for the altar a brasen grate of network under the compass thereof beneath unto the midst of it.
Exodus 38:4 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of the tabernacle’s construction in the wilderness. God gave Moses detailed instructions for the altar of burnt offering in Exodus 27:1-8, and Exodus 38 records how the workers carried them out. The altar stood at the entrance of the tabernacle, where the people brought their sacrifices to God.
Meaning
The altar was made of acacia wood and overlaid with bronze. In Scripture, bronze often represents judgment and purification. The “brasen grate of network” was a bronze mesh placed under the altar’s ledge, extending halfway up from the bottom. This grate held the wood and the sacrifice while allowing ashes and blood to fall through, and it helped the fire burn properly. The network pattern may suggest the thoroughness of God’s provision for sin.
Biblical connections
The altar was central to Israel’s worship. Burnt offerings, grain offerings, and peace offerings were presented there as acts of worship and atonement, symbolizing a meeting point between God and His people. The bronze grate reminds us that God’s judgment is real, but He provided a way for sins to be covered. This altar points forward to Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice on the cross brings full redemption and forgiveness to all who believe. Hebrews 13:10 speaks of an altar that believers may draw near to, identifying the cross of Christ as the true altar of worship.
Application
As believers, we are called to offer our lives as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1), surrendering fully to God and seeking forgiveness through Christ. The careful construction of the altar teaches us that worship requires reverence, order, and attention to detail. Just as the grate supported the sacrifice, our lives should be supported by faith in Christ, who is our foundation. We can approach God directly through Jesus, without the need for animal sacrifices, and we are invited to come to Him in prayer with confidence.
Reflection
This verse shows that even small details in the tabernacle had meaning. The bronze grate, hidden beneath the altar, played a vital role in the sacrificial system. It reminds us that God cares about the hidden parts of our lives, not just what others see. He sees our hearts and desires that we live in purity and obedience. As we reflect on the altar and its grate, we are encouraged to examine our own lives, to let go of sin, and to embrace the cleansing that comes through Christ’s sacrifice.
