Exodus 39:22
And he made the robe of the ephod of woven work, all of blue.
Exodus 39:22 (KJV)
Context
This verse records the completion of the high priest’s robe of the ephod, a garment God first commanded in Exodus 28:31. The craftsmen followed the detailed instructions given through Moses, making the robe as part of the sacred attire for Aaron and his sons. These garments set the priests apart for holy service and reminded them of their role as mediators between Israel and God.
Meaning
The robe of the ephod was an outer garment worn under the ephod, which was a vest-like piece adorned with stones representing the twelve tribes. Unlike the ephod, made with gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen, this robe was entirely blue. The phrase “woven work” points to the weaver’s skill and the care required for sacred service. Blue often symbolises heaven, divine nature, and God’s commandments, reminding the priest that he entered the presence of the Holy One. The robe was longer than the ephod, covering the priest fully, and it had no decorative figures. This simplicity, combined with its single colour, made it distinct and set apart for its holy purpose.
Biblical connections
This verse fulfils the earlier command in Exodus 28:31, where God instructed that the robe be made “all of blue.” The craftsmen’s obedience shows the importance of following God’s detailed directions in worship. The blue robe also connects to the heavenly calling of the priesthood, a theme later applied to believers who are called a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9). The colour blue appears elsewhere in Scripture, often linked to the law and to heavenly realities, reinforcing the priest’s role as one who stood before God on behalf of the people.
Application
The skilled work reminds us to give our best in serving God, whether in work, relationships, or ministry, as Colossians 3:23 encourages. The blue colour teaches us to approach God with reverence and purity, not taking His presence lightly. As believers share in a priestly calling, we are to reflect His holiness in our daily lives. The careful obedience of the craftsmen challenges us to follow God’s Word precisely, even when we do not fully understand every detail. Our service, like the robe, should be marked by excellence and wholehearted devotion.
Sacredness of priesthood: We are set apart to serve God and represent Him, so our lives should honour Him.
Attention to detail: Excellence in service shows respect for God and His work.
Holiness and reverence: We must approach God with awe, remembering His majesty and greatness.
Reflection
Exodus 39:22 teaches us about the sacredness of our calling, the value of careful service, and the need for holy reverence. The robe’s single colour and skilled workmanship point to a God who values both beauty and obedience. Let us strive to live in a way that honours God and brings glory to His name, remembering that we serve a holy God who deserves our very best.
