Colossians 3:23

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

Paul wrote Colossians to the church in Colossae, addressing believers on how to live as followers of Christ. In this passage, he instructs them to put off the old self and put on the new self in Christ. The immediate setting includes instructions to servants about their conduct toward earthly masters (Colossians 3:18–4:1), but the opening phrase broadens the principle to every area of life.

The verse begins with “whatsoever ye do,” indicating that the instruction applies to all aspects of our lives, not just specific tasks. It encompasses work, relationships, service, and everything we engage in. Paul urges believers to approach every task with wholeheartedness.

“Heartily” translates the Greek phrase ek psuches, meaning “from the soul.” This calls for sincere, enthusiastic effort rather than mere outward compliance or eye-service. It reflects an attitude of excellence and a desire to honor God in all that we do.

The motivation behind our effort is crucial. Paul emphasizes doing everything “as to the Lord,” not merely to please people or seek their approval. Our work and service should honor God, seeing ourselves as working for the Lord Himself. While respecting human authority, our ultimate allegiance is to God. We are not to become people-pleasers, seeking recognition or applause from others, but to focus on pleasing God, knowing that He sees and rewards sincere efforts even when unnoticed by others.

This principle applies to studies, careers, relationships, and church service. Approaching each task as if doing it for the Lord transforms ordinary duties into acts of worship, bringing purpose and meaning to daily life.

  • Reflection: Consider areas where you may not be giving your best effort or where you seek human approval rather than God’s honor. Ask God for strength and grace to serve Him with all your heart.

Our work, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can have eternal significance when done with the right motivation and wholeheartedness as unto the Lord.
