Colossians 3:22

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Verse: “Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God.” (Colossians 3:22, KJV)

Context:It’s essential to understand the context of a verse to grasp its full meaning. The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians while he was imprisoned, addressing various issues within the church. In this particular section, Paul provides instructions on relationships within the Christian household, including the relationship between servants and masters.

Servants and Masters:In the time when Paul wrote this letter, slavery was prevalent in society. The term “servants” refers to slaves or bond servants who were under the authority of their masters. The instruction given here is specifically addressed to them.

Obedience:Paul instructs the servants to obey their masters in all things. This obedience is to be extended to their earthly masters, those “according to the flesh.” This instruction does not endorse or support the institution of slavery but rather provides guidance for the behavior of Christian slaves within that societal structure.

Attitude:Paul emphasizes that obedience should not be motivated by outward appearances or to please men (“eyeservice” or “menpleasers”). Rather, their obedience should come from a sincere heart, characterized by integrity and wholehearted devotion to God.

Fearing God:The key motivation for their obedience is the fear of God. This does not imply a terror or fright but a reverent awe and respect for God’s authority. Servants are to recognize that their ultimate allegiance is to God, and by serving their masters faithfully, they honor and serve God as well.

Application for today:While the specific context of slavery may not be directly applicable today, we can draw broader principles from this verse. As Christians, we are called to exhibit integrity, honesty, and wholehearted devotion to God in our relationships and responsibilities. We should work diligently, respecting and obeying our employers or those in positions of authority, not merely for personal gain or approval but as an expression of our reverence for God.

Equality in Christ:It’s important to note that throughout the New Testament, there are teachings that emphasize the equality of all believers in Christ, regardless of social status or positions. While this verse addresses a specific historical context, it should not be used to justify or perpetuate any form of oppression or inequality.

Remember to study the Bible as a whole and consider the teachings and principles found in other passages to gain a more comprehensive understanding of God’s Word.
