Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

Context

Paul has just urged believers to put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love (Colossians 3:12-17). He now turns to specific household relationships, beginning with wives and husbands. This instruction belongs to the New Testament household codes, which also appear in Ephesians 5:22-6:9 and 1 Peter 3:1-7.

Meaning

The verse addresses wives directly, calling them to submit to their own husbands. The Greek word for “submit” (hypotassō) conveys a voluntary attitude of respect, honor, and cooperation, not blind obedience or subservience. This does not imply inequality or inferiority; rather, it highlights a distinct role within the marital relationship. Biblical submission is not a licence for abuse or mistreatment. It follows the model of Christ’s submission to God the Father, rooted in love and mutual respect.

The qualifier “as it is fit in the Lord” sets the boundary for this instruction. Submission is to be exercised within the Lord’s will and according to His teachings. It is not arbitrary or absolute, but appropriate and pleasing to God when done in the context of faith in Christ.

The instruction is not isolated but part of a reciprocal relationship. The following verse (Colossians 3:19) commands husbands to love their wives and not be harsh with them.
