Exodus 39:25

And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between the pomegranates upon the hem of the robe, round about between the pomegranates;

Exodus 39:25 (KJV)

This verse appears in the account of the Tabernacle’s construction, where the Israelites followed the precise instructions God gave to Moses. The focus here is on the priestly garments, especially the robe of the ephod worn by Aaron the high priest. The verse records that bells of pure gold were made and placed between pomegranate ornaments around the hem of the robe, exactly as God had commanded.

The golden bells were not merely decorative. They were attached alternately with pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, creating a pattern that combined sound and color. The bells were made of pure gold, emphasizing the preciousness and holiness of the priestly attire. Their placement on the hem ensured that the sound accompanied the priest’s movements as he ministered in the sanctuary, fulfilling the earlier instruction in Exodus 28:33-34.

The craftsmanship described here directly fulfills God’s command given earlier in Exodus 28. The alternating pattern of bell and pomegranate was a specific design, and the workers executed it precisely as the LORD commanded Moses. This obedience highlights the importance of following God’s instructions in worship, even in details that might seem small.

The bells teach several spiritual lessons. First, they remind us of holiness and reverence: the high priest represented the people before God, and the ringing of the bells announced his approach, calling him to act with solemnity. Second, they mark distinctiveness, setting the priest apart for sacred service. Believers today are likewise called to live as a holy and distinct people, reflecting God’s character. Third, the sound of the bells prompts alertness, encouraging us to remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and ready to obey. Finally, the combination of bells and pomegranates demonstrates unity—different elements working together harmoniously. In the body of Christ, each member contributes unique gifts for the benefit of the whole church.

As we consider this verse, we are encouraged to pursue holiness in worship and service, embrace our identity as God’s chosen people, and stay spiritually alert to God’s voice. We can approach God with confidence through Christ, our great High Priest, and seek unity within the church while honoring diversity. The detailed care given to the priestly garments reminds us that God values both beauty and obedience in our worship.
