Exodus 39:42

According to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel made all the work.

Exodus 39:42 (KJV)

Exodus 39:42 closes the long account of building the Tabernacle, the portable tent where Israel worshipped God during their wilderness journey. The preceding chapters, Exodus 35-38, record God’s detailed commands about materials, colors, measurements, and design. Exodus 39 then describes the skilled work of the artisans who made the priestly garments, the ephod, the breastplate, and other sacred items. This verse is a summary statement: the people completed every task exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The phrase “according to all that the LORD commanded Moses” repeats twice in this short verse, emphasizing complete and precise obedience. The children of Israel did not alter, omit, or add to God’s instructions. Their work was not a human project shaped by personal preference; it was a divine mandate carried out with care. The verse highlights that true obedience means doing God’s work in God’s way, not in a way that seems better or easier.

This pattern of obedience appears throughout Exodus. For example, Exodus 12:50 records that the Israelites did as the Lord commanded Moses at the first Passover, and Exodus 40:16 repeats the same phrase as the Tabernacle is set up. The immediate context also matters: Exodus 39:43 tells us that Moses inspected the work, saw that it was done as the Lord commanded, and blessed the people. This shows that faithful obedience brings divine approval and blessing. The Tabernacle itself points forward to Christ, who perfectly fulfilled all of God’s commands and became the true dwelling place of God with humanity.

This verse teaches that God values both obedience and excellence. The Israelites used their skills and talents to serve Him, and their careful work honored Him. Believers today can offer their own gifts in service to God, doing their work with diligence and reverence. The verse also calls for trust in God’s design. Even when His plans are not fully understood, His ways are perfect, and following them brings blessing. Obedience to God’s Word demonstrates love for Him and recognition of His authority.

  • Follow God’s commands completely, without compromise or deviation.

  • Use your skills and talents for His purposes, as the artisans did.

  • Trust God’s design for your life, even when it is not clear.

  • Approach worship with holiness and reverence, remembering that God is holy.

The obedience of Israel was commendable, but it was a shadow of the perfect obedience of Christ. He accomplished the ultimate work of redemption, becoming the true Tabernacle where God dwells with His people. This verse encourages believers to follow God faithfully, knowing that obedience brings His presence and blessing. As the Israelites experienced God’s guidance in the wilderness, so those who obey Him today can know His care and direction in their lives.
