Exodus 39:5
And the curious girdle of his ephod, that was upon it, was of the same, according to the work thereof; of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen; as the Lord commanded Moses.
Exodus 39:5 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the larger account of making the priestly garments for Aaron and his sons. In Exodus 28 and 39, God gives Moses detailed instructions for these sacred clothes. The people carry out every detail with care, and this verse records the completion of the ephod’s girdle.
Meaning
The ephod was a sleeveless garment worn by the high priest. It had two shoulder pieces fastened by onyx stones, each engraved with six names of the tribes of Israel. This showed that the priest carried the people on his shoulders when he served before the Lord. The “curious girdle” was the skillfully woven sash that held the ephod in place. The word “curious” here means artistic or skillfully made, not strange. It was made of the same materials as the ephod: gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twined linen. Being of one piece with the ephod, the girdle showed unity and consistency in the priestly attire. This unity also pointed to the harmony of God’s design for worship.
Biblical connections
The materials carried deep meaning. Gold spoke of purity and divinity. Blue pointed to heaven and the law. Purple signified royalty. Scarlet represented sacrifice or redemption. Fine twined linen stood for righteousness. Together they pictured the holiness and beauty of the priest’s service. This verse also connects directly to Exodus 28:8, where the same instruction was first given. The repetition of “as the LORD commanded Moses” shows that the people obeyed exactly what God had said. Their careful work fulfilled the pattern God revealed, not their own ideas.
Application
Christians today do not wear priestly garments, but the lesson of obedience remains. The Israelites did not add to or subtract from God’s instructions. They followed them precisely. This challenges us to obey God’s Word in every part of life, even when the details seem small. The care and craftsmanship also remind us that our service to God should be excellent and wholehearted. Just as the girdle held the ephod firmly, our commitment to God’s commands should hold our lives together in faithful worship. We can serve God with the same attention to His will.
Reflection
Exodus 39:5 calls us to examine our own obedience. Do we follow God’s Word completely, or do we pick and choose what suits us? The priestly garments were made with beauty and precision because they were for God’s service. Our lives, too, are to be offered to God with reverence and care. The verse reminds us that God notices faithful obedience and delights in it. Let us seek to serve Him with the same exactness and devotion shown by the Israelites.
