Exodus 4:21

And the Lord said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.

Exodus 4:21 (KJV)

This verse belongs to Moses’ commissioning in Midian, just before he returns to Egypt. God had called Moses at the burning bush and given him signs to prove his authority. Now God tells Moses to perform all the wonders before Pharaoh, and He also reveals what will happen: Pharaoh will not let the people go. God speaks plainly, so Moses knows from the start that the mission will meet resistance.

God says, “I will harden his heart.” This shows that God is in control. The wonders Moses would perform were not from his own power but from God, who had put them in his hand. God also knew Pharaoh’s stubbornness in advance. His hardening was not a surprise to God; it was part of His plan. The verse teaches that God’s purposes are not frustrated by human opposition.

God’s hardening of Pharaoh’s heart is a serious truth. It does not mean God forced Pharaoh against his will. Rather, God gave Pharaoh over to his own proud and stubborn heart. This is similar to Romans 1:24, where God gives people over to their sinful desires. Pharaoh had already shown resistance, and God’s action confirmed his choice. The hardening served a clear purpose: to display God’s power and to bring about Israel’s deliverance.

This verse teaches us to rely on God’s power, not our own. Moses had no strength to change Pharaoh’s heart, but God did. When we face hard situations, we can trust that God is working even when people resist. We are also reminded of human responsibility. Pharaoh could have humbled himself, but his pride led to judgment. God’s sovereignty does not erase our duty to respond to Him.

God’s plan was to display His power through the plagues and to deliver Israel. Pharaoh’s hardened heart became the stage for God’s mighty acts. This encourages us to trust that God’s purposes will prevail despite opposition. We can submit to His sovereign will, knowing that He is faithful to His people. Even when circumstances seem resistant, God remains in control and works out His good plan.
