Exodus 40:23
And he set the bread in order vpon it, before the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses. Exodus 40:23 (KJV)
In Exodus 40 we see Moses faithfully carrying out God’s instructions to set up the Tabernacle and consecrate it for worship. This event marks the completion of the Tabernacle’s construction and signals the moment when God’s presence would dwell among His people as they journeyed through the wilderness.
The Table of Showbread was a sacred piece of furniture located in the Holy Place of the Tabernacle (Exodus 26:35). It was made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold. The table was about one and a half feet long, one and a half feet wide, and roughly two and a quarter feet high. It had a crown or a border around the top to prevent the bread from falling off.
The bread placed on the Table of Showbread was known as the “bread of the Presence” or “shewbread” (Leviticus 24:5‑9). The Israelite priests prepared twelve loaves each week, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The loaves were arranged in two rows of six on the table, replaced every Sabbath day, and the old loaves were reserved for the priests to eat in a holy place.
Spiritual significance flows from this arrangement. The table represented God’s presence among His people; its placement inside the Holy Place, just before the veil that separated it from the Most Holy Place, shows God’s desire to commune with His people. The showbread also symbolized God’s provision and sustenance for the chosen nation.
The twelve loaves signified community and unity, each loaf standing for a tribe, illustrating that all tribes were equal before God and formed a united community.
In the New Testament, Jesus declared Himself the “bread of life” (John 6:35). The Table of Showbread and its bread therefore foreshadow Christ, who provides spiritual nourishment and eternal life to all who believe.
The weekly replacement of the bread points to an eternal fellowship between God and His people, a relationship that is perpetuated through generations.
Application arises from these truths. First, we should seek God’s presence as the Israelites did, dwelling in His presence through prayer, worship, and Scripture study. Second, we are called to gratitude for God’s provision, remembering how the showbread reminded Israel of divine sustenance in the wilderness. Third, the unity of the twelve loaves urges believers to maintain unity within the body of Christ, loving one another as Christ loved us. Finally, recognizing Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of the showbread’s symbolism reminds us that He is the true Bread of Life, offering spiritual nourishment and eternal life.
In conclusion, Exodus 40:23, with its reference to the Table of Showbread, reminds us of God’s abiding presence, His generous provision, and the everlasting fellowship He offers. It also points forward to Jesus Christ, the ultimate source of spiritual sustenance and life. May we draw nearer to God, cherish His provision, pursue unity, and rely on Christ, the Bread of Life, for our daily spiritual nourishment.
