Exodus 40:24
And he put the candlesticke in the Tent of the Congregation, ouer against the Table, on the side of the Tabernacle Southward. Exodus 40:24 (KJV)
Exodus 40 describes the final stage of the construction of the Tabernacle—a portable and sacred dwelling place for God among the Israelites during their wilderness journey. The Tabernacle was the central place of worship and symbolized God’s presence in their midst.
The Candlestick (or Lampstand): The verse mentions the placement of the candlestick inside the tent of the congregation. This candlestick was one of the key pieces of furniture of the Tabernacle. It was made of pure gold and had a central shaft with six branches, totaling seven lamps. It is also referred to as the “lampstand” or “menorah.”
Location: The candlestick was placed “over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward.” It stood on the south side of the Tabernacle, opposite the table of showbread.
Significance of the Candlestick: The lampstand held both symbolic and practical significance. Symbolically, it represented light, knowledge, and wisdom, and is often associated with the presence of God, who is the source of all light (see Psalm 27:1). The light from the lamps symbolized God’s guidance, enlightenment, and His illuminating presence among the Israelites.
The Table of Showbread: The table mentioned in the verse refers to the “Table of Showbread,” another significant piece of furniture inside the Tabernacle. Made of acacia wood overlaid with gold, it held twelve loaves of bread, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and symbolized God’s provision and sustenance.
The Southward Placement: The specific location of the candlestick to the south is described in Scripture, though no explicit biblical symbolism for the south direction is provided in this context.
Application: As believers today, we can draw lessons from this verse. The placement of the candlestick reminds us of our responsibility to shine God’s light in the world (Matthew 5:14‑16). We are called to be lights in a dark world, displaying the wisdom and knowledge found in Christ. The position of the candlestick opposite the table of showbread reminds us of the importance of God’s provision—both physical and spiritual—and our dependence on Him for sustenance.
Final Thoughts: Exodus 40:24 underscores the significance of God’s presence and His guidance in our lives. It symbolizes the importance of being lights in a dark world and the provision and sustenance that come from God. As we study and meditate on God’s Word, may we be encouraged to walk in His light and share it with others, knowing that He is the source of all wisdom and understanding.
