Exodus 40:31

Exodus 40:31 (KJV)

Exodus 40 records the final steps of setting up the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary the Israelites used during their wilderness journey. This chapter describes the completion and dedication of the tabernacle according to God’s specific instructions. God had given Moses detailed directions for constructing and consecrating the tabernacle, and in this verse Moses, Aaron, and Aaron’s sons perform one of the essential rituals of purification.

The washing took place at the laver, a bronze basin placed between the tabernacle and the altar. God had earlier commanded that Aaron and his sons wash their hands and feet before entering the tent of meeting or approaching the altar (Exodus 30:19-21). This was not a one-time event but a continual requirement for the priests. In Exodus 40:31, Moses himself joins Aaron and his sons in this act, showing his role in consecrating the priests and his obedience to God’s command.

The washing of hands and feet served as ceremonial purification. It signified the need for spiritual cleanliness and consecration before approaching God and serving in the tabernacle. The physical act pointed to a deeper truth: God is holy, and those who serve Him must be cleansed. The priests could not enter God’s presence with dirty hands or feet, just as believers cannot approach Him with unconfessed sin.

This washing also demonstrated reverence and devotion. By following God’s instructions exactly, the priests showed that their service was not casual but sacred. The act set them apart for their duties and reminded them of the seriousness of their role as intermediaries between God and the people.

Washing in the Bible often carries symbolic meaning. It represents the removal of impurity and sin, emphasising the need for holiness in God’s presence. This Old Testament ritual foreshadows the ministry of Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17), demonstrating humility and service. Through that action, He taught His followers the importance of spiritual cleansing and humble love for one another.

The connection between the laver and the cross is also meaningful. Just as the priests needed cleansing before serving, believers need the cleansing that comes through Christ. The writer of Hebrews explains that the old rituals could not make worshippers perfect, but they pointed to a better sacrifice (Hebrews 10:1-4). Jesus provides the complete cleansing that the laver could only symbolise.

As believers, we are called to be a holy and set-apart people, just as the priests were in the Old Testament. Before approaching God in prayer or service, we should examine our hearts and seek spiritual cleansing through repentance and forgiveness. Our worship and service should flow from a heart devoted to Him.

Like Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, we are called to serve one another with humility and love. Jesus set an example of selfless service, and we should follow in His footsteps by showing kindness and compassion to others, even in simple acts of service. Before entering prayer or communion with God, we can take a moment to present our hearts before Him, asking Him to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If you are involved in any form of ministry or leadership, remember the importance of consecration and preparation. Regularly seek God’s guidance and cleansing, asking Him to equip you for His service and to use you for His glory. The priests washed daily; our need for spiritual cleansing is also ongoing.

Exodus 40:31 reminds us that approaching God requires holiness. The priests could not serve without washing, and we cannot serve effectively without spiritual purification. This verse calls us to examine our own lives and ask whether we are prepared to meet God. It also encourages us to rely on Christ, who cleanses us from sin and enables us to serve with pure hearts. May we continually seek God’s cleansing and dedicate ourselves to His service.
