Exodus 7:6
And Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded them, so did they.
Exodus 7:6 (KJV)
Context
This verse stands at the turning point of the Exodus story. The Israelites are enslaved in Egypt, and God has called Moses at the burning bush to confront Pharaoh. In Exodus 7, Moses and Aaron are about to appear before the king for the first time. Their obedience here follows God’s promise that through mighty acts of judgment, the Egyptians would know that He is the LORD (Exodus 7:4-5).
Meaning
The words “so did they” are emphatic. They show that Moses and Aaron carried out God’s command with readiness and complete conformity. They did not add to it or subtract from it. Their precise obedience was the human response that set the stage for the plagues. This was not blind ritual but trust in God’s authority, even before a powerful ruler. Their action also reflects faith, as they obeyed before seeing any result, trusting that God would fulfill His word.
Biblical connections
Their action also fulfilled God’s earlier promise to Abraham that his descendants would be freed after a period of bondage (Genesis 15:13-14). Moses and Aaron were instruments of that promise. Their faithfulness shows that God works through people who obey Him, even when the outcome seems uncertain. This moment marks the beginning of the public confrontation that would lead to Israel’s liberation, as God had foretold.
Application
We are called to obey God’s commands exactly as He gives them, not just when they are easy. Like Moses and Aaron, we may face daunting tasks or powerful opposition. Yet their example teaches us to trust God’s leading and follow His instructions faithfully. When we submit to His will, we position ourselves to be used for His purposes.
Trusting God’s guidance means acting on His Word even when we cannot see the full result.
Faithful obedience requires readiness and complete conformity to God’s instructions.
Recognizing God’s sovereignty helps us yield to His plans and experience His power.
Reflection
Moses and Aaron did not hesitate. Their obedience was immediate and complete. This challenges us to examine our own response to God’s commands. Do we obey fully, or do we hold back? Their example reminds us that true success comes not from human effort alone but from aligning ourselves with God’s plans. As we follow Him, we can trust that His purposes will prevail.
