Exodus 8:32

And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.

Exodus 8:32 (KJV)

This verse closes the account of the fourth plague, when God sent flies upon Egypt to compel Pharaoh to release the Israelites. Moses had warned Pharaoh, and Pharaoh had promised to let the people go if the plague stopped. Yet once the flies were removed, he broke his word and refused again. The phrase “at this time also” shows that this was not a single failure but a repeated pattern of resistance.

The phrase “Pharaoh hardened his heart” shows that he deliberately made himself unyielding. The Hebrew wording, reflected in some translations as “made his heart insensitive,” stresses that Pharaoh actively resisted God’s command and the miracles before him. He was not a passive victim; he chose stubbornness. Each refusal made his heart more resistant, so that even after the plague was lifted, he grew harder rather than softer.

This is not the first time Pharaoh hardened his own heart. Earlier, after the plague of frogs, he did the same (Exodus 8:15). Later, beginning with the seventh plague, God Himself hardened Pharaoh’s heart (Exodus 9:12, 10:27). This progression shows a movement from personal resistance to divine judgment, while still holding Pharaoh responsible for his choices. His hardening served to display God’s power and to fulfill the word spoken through Moses.

Each refusal made Pharaoh’s heart harder, not softer. This warns us that repeated disobedience can sear our conscience and make us calloused to God’s voice. When God speaks, we should respond promptly and humbly, rather than delay or bargain. Persistent rejection of God’s truth leads to a seared conscience, so we must guard our hearts against small compromises.

Pharaoh’s resistance did not defeat God’s purpose. His stubbornness only multiplied the signs and wonders in Egypt. This assures us that God’s plans will stand, even when human hearts oppose Him. It also invites us to examine our own hearts and ask whether we are growing softer or harder toward God’s instruction.
