Exodus 9:11

And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.

Exodus 9:11 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the account of the plagues God sent upon Egypt to free the Israelites from slavery. In Exodus 9, Moses and Aaron repeatedly warned Pharaoh, but he refused to let the people go. During the sixth plague, they scattered soot from a furnace into the air, and painful boils broke out on people and animals throughout Egypt. The plague was a direct judgment from God, showing His power over the land and its people.

The magicians, who earlier had copied some of God’s signs through their secret arts, could no longer stand before Moses. The boils struck them too, making it impossible for them to oppose him. Their inability to stand was not just physical weakness; it showed that their power had failed completely. From this point in the narrative, the magicians no longer try to imitate or counter the plagues. Their defeat was both physical and spiritual, a clear sign that God’s power is supreme over all human wisdom and false religion.

This moment echoes the earlier contest in Exodus 7, where the magicians reproduced some signs, but here they are silenced. The plague of boils also targeted the Egyptian gods associated with health and magic, proving that the one true God rules over every sphere of life. The judgment fell on all Egyptians, including the religious experts, showing that no rank or skill could shield anyone from God’s power. This turning point prepares for the later plagues, where God’s might is displayed even more fully.

This verse teaches that human wisdom, magic, and false religion cannot stand against God. When we face opposition or feel overwhelmed, we can trust that God’s power is greater than any force against us. It also warns that pride and resistance to God lead to humiliation and judgment. Just as the boils revealed the magicians’ weakness, God’s judgments expose the limits of every human authority. We are called to humble ourselves before Him, rather than rely on our own abilities or the world’s resources.

God’s sovereignty is absolute, and His justice is certain. The magicians’ defeat encourages us to rely on God rather than on our own abilities or the world’s resources. It also reminds us that God sees the hearts of all people, and He calls everyone to acknowledge Him as the one true God. This verse invites us to examine where we place our trust and to submit to God’s authority with humble faith. Even when we face seemingly insurmountable challenges, we can be confident that no human power can stand against His will.
