Ezekiel 1:3

The word of the Lord came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the Lord was there upon him.

Ezekiel 1:3 (KJV)

Ezekiel ministered during the Babylonian exile, after the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem in 586 BCE. He was among the captives settled in the land of the Chaldeans, by the river Chebar, likely a canal or tributary near Babylon. This setting shaped his prophetic message to a people in displacement.

The verse identifies Ezekiel as a priest, the son of Buzi, and states that the word of the LORD came to him expressly. The word “expressly” indicates that God’s message arrived directly, clearly, and unmistakably, not through human invention. This underscores the divine origin and authority of Ezekiel’s calling.

The closing phrase, “the hand of the LORD was there upon him,” signifies God’s empowering presence and supernatural enablement for the prophetic task. It assures that divine calling is accompanied by divine strength.

Ezekiel’s dual role as priest and prophet is significant. As a priest, he was familiar with the temple and its rituals, yet he received his call in a foreign land, far from the temple. This highlights that God’s presence and revelation are not confined to Jerusalem but can reach His people even in exile.

Ezekiel’s experience teaches that God speaks clearly and directly to His people, and His call can come in unexpected places and circumstances. Just as God equipped Ezekiel for a specific purpose, He has a unique plan for each believer. The phrase “the hand of the LORD” reminds us that God’s presence and power are available to us, encouraging reliance on His guidance and authority in our lives.

This verse sets the stage for Ezekiel’s prophetic ministry, highlighting the divine calling, the specific location, and the influence of God upon his life. It invites readers to consider how God’s word may come to them in their own circumstances, and to trust that His hand is upon those He calls.
