Ezekiel 12:2
Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house.
Ezekiel 12:2 (KJV)
Context
God addresses Ezekiel as “Son of man,” a title that stresses the prophet’s humanity and his calling as a messenger. The people of Israel, here called a “rebellious house,” were living in exile in Babylon, yet they continued to resist God’s word through His prophet. The repeated phrase “rebellious house” emphasizes that their disobedience was deliberate, not accidental.
Meaning
The description of having eyes but not seeing and ears but not hearing is a metaphor for spiritual blindness and deafness. Though the Israelites had physical sight and hearing, they refused to perceive or obey the truth God revealed. Their condition was not a lack of ability but a willful hardening of heart, a symptom of persistent rebellion against God.
Biblical connections
This verse sets the stage for the symbolic acts that follow in Ezekiel 12, which were designed to provoke understanding and warn of Jerusalem’s coming exile. The same imagery of unseeing eyes and unhearing ears appears in Isaiah 6:9-10, where it describes a people who will not turn and be healed. Ultimately, the prophet’s role as God’s mouthpiece finds its fulfillment in Christ, who opens the eyes of the blind and makes the deaf to hear.
Application
For believers today, this verse is a warning against spiritual dullness. It challenges us to examine whether we truly see and hear God’s Word or have become resistant to His voice. The remedy is repentance and a humble heart that seeks God’s illumination. We should pray for spiritual sight and hearing, study Scripture regularly, and respond in obedience to what God reveals, guarding against a hard heart that rebellion can produce.
Reflection
God’s purpose in confronting rebellion is not merely to inform but to call His people back to Himself. The same grace that exposed Israel’s blindness is available to us, enabling us to turn from our own rebellion and walk in the light of His truth.
