Ezekiel 12:27
Sonne of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say; The vision that he seeth is for many dayes to come, and he prophecieth of the times that are far off. Ezekiel 12:27 (KJV)
The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and the prophet Ezekiel was called by God to speak to the exiled Israelites in Babylon. The people of Israel were living in a time of rebellion and idolatry, and Ezekiel’s mission was to warn them of the impending judgment and to call them to repentance.
The address “Son of man” is a phrase that God frequently used to speak to Ezekiel. It emphasizes his human nature while also highlighting his role as God’s messenger.
In this verse the Israelites express skepticism, saying that the vision is for many days to come and that the prophecy concerns times far off. They doubted the immediate relevance of Ezekiel’s messages, misunderstanding both the timing and the significance of the visions. While some prophecies pointed to distant future events, others had immediate consequences, such as the prediction of the fall of Jerusalem (Ezekiel 12:16). This skepticism reveals a spiritual condition of unwillingness to accept the message of judgment and repentance.
As believers we are called to approach God’s Word with humility and a willingness to receive His messages, even when they challenge our understanding or seem distant in fulfillment. We must not dismiss or underestimate the significance of divine revelations but should seek to understand and apply them to our lives.
Ezekiel 12:27 therefore highlights the Israelites’ skepticism and misunderstanding, reminding us to recognize that God’s messages are relevant to our present circumstances. By approaching Scripture with humility and discernment, we can appreciate its significance for today, even when the fulfillment appears far off.
