Ezekiel 14:4
Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the Lord will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;
Ezekiel 14:4 (KJV)
Context
The book of Ezekiel is set during the Babylonian exile, when the people of Israel had been taken captive by King Nebuchadnezzar. Ezekiel, the prophet, was among the exiles in Babylon, and God chose him as a messenger to deliver His warnings, prophecies, and instructions to the people. In this setting, God addresses the issue of idolatry among the Israelites, a people with a long history of turning away from the true worship of God to worship idols made by human hands.
Meaning
In this verse, God points out that idolatry is not only manifested through physical idols but can also occur in the heart. The people had set up idols in their hearts, allowing these false gods to take precedence over their devotion to the true God. This highlights the importance of examining our hearts and ensuring that God has the rightful place of honor and worship within us.
God also mentions the “stumbling block of iniquity” that the people had placed before themselves. This refers to the sins and offenses that hindered their relationship with God. The people’s idolatry and sinful actions became obstacles in their pursuit of righteousness and prevented them from experiencing God’s blessings and guidance. The phrase “before his face” suggests that this stumbling block was deliberately set in view, perhaps as a barrier to true repentance.
Despite their idolatrous practices, the people would still come to the prophet seeking guidance and answers from God. However, God makes it clear that He will answer them according to the multitude of their idols. This implies that if they approach God while still holding onto their idols and sinful ways, His response will be influenced by their lack of wholehearted devotion and faith. God cannot be deceived by outward religiosity when the heart is unfaithful; He sees the hidden idolatry of the heart, not just outward actions.
Application
This verse carries timeless lessons for believers today. It reminds us to examine our hearts and ensure that we have no idols taking precedence over our relationship with God. We must be cautious not to allow anything to hinder our pursuit of righteousness and devotion to Him. God desires wholehearted commitment and worship, and He will respond to us accordingly. Coming to God for guidance while harboring idols is hypocrisy; He will respond in a manner suited to the person’s many idols, implying judgment rather than blessing.
Examine your heart for any idol—whether a possession, relationship, ambition, or habit—that may have taken God’s rightful place.
Approach God with a repentant heart, removing the stumbling blocks of sin that hinder your relationship with Him.
Seek God’s guidance with wholehearted devotion, knowing that He sees the true condition of your heart.
Reflection
