Ezekiel 16:1
Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
Ezekiel 16:1 (KJV)
Context
The book of Ezekiel records messages from God to the exiled Israelites in Babylon during the sixth century BCE. Ezekiel was called by God to be a watchman over the people, delivering messages of judgment, warning, and hope. At this time, the Israelites were in captivity because of their disobedience; Jerusalem and its temple had been destroyed, leaving the people discouraged and spiritually unfaithful.
Meaning
“Again the word of the Lord came unto me” signifies that Ezekiel is receiving a fresh message from God. The word “again” points to a pattern of divine revelation; God had spoken to Ezekiel before, and He continues to speak. This recurring phrase appears throughout Ezekiel (for example, 12:1, 18:1, 23:1, 25:1, 27:1), marking the beginning of each new prophetic message. The phrase “the word of the Lord” underscores the divine origin and authority of the message; it is not Ezekiel’s own invention but a direct communication from God. The Targum, an Aramaic paraphrase, renders this as “the word of prophecy from the Lord,” indicating that what follows is a prophetic revelation given under the Spirit’s influence.
Biblical connections
This verse is not an isolated statement but part of a larger pattern of divine revelation. The same formula introduces many of Ezekiel’s oracles, emphasizing the consistency and reliability of God’s communication with His prophets. In the immediate context, Ezekiel 16 presents a vivid allegory of Jerusalem’s unfaithfulness, portraying the city as an abandoned child whom God has shown mercy and grace. This verse sets the stage for that message, showing that God speaks directly into the specific historical situation of His people.
Application
The Continuity of God’s Word: Despite the challenging circumstances and the people’s unfaithfulness, God’s word came to Ezekiel again. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness in communicating with His people and His desire for them to know His will.
God’s Initiative: The phrase “the word of the Lord came unto me” emphasizes that it was God who initiated the conversation. This reminds us that our relationship with God is not solely based on our efforts but is primarily driven by God’s grace and initiative.
Responsiveness to God’s Word: Ezekiel’s readiness to receive and transmit God’s message highlights the importance of being attentive and responsive to God’s word in our own lives. As believers, we should be open and receptive to the voice of God, seeking His guidance and direction.
