Ezekiel 16:34

“And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore thou art contrary.”

Context:To understand the significance of Ezekiel 16:34, it is essential to consider the broader context of the chapter. Ezekiel 16 contains a powerful allegory depicting Jerusalem as an unfaithful wife. It portrays the spiritual adultery of the people of Israel, who turned away from God and engaged in idolatry, seeking alliances with foreign nations and participating in their practices.

Unique Conduct:In verse 34, God declares that Jerusalem’s behaviour differs from that of other women engaged in similar acts of whoredom. While other women are followed by their lovers, Jerusalem is left alone, with no one willing to engage in such acts with her. This signifies the consequences of Israel’s unfaithfulness: abandonment, rejection, and a loss of favour.

Unreciprocated Rewards:The verse further highlights the discrepancy in Jerusalem’s conduct. While she gives rewards or gifts to her lovers, no rewards are given to her in return. This emphasises the one-sidedness of Jerusalem’s unfaithfulness. She seeks companionship and pleasure from other nations, but they do not reciprocate with genuine love or loyalty.

Consequences of Contrariness:The verse concludes by stating that Jerusalem is “contrary.” The term “contrary” can be understood as meaning rebellious or contrary to God’s laws and expectations. Jerusalem’s actions go against the nature and purpose for which God had chosen and blessed Israel. As a result, the consequences of her rebellious behaviour are manifested in the form of abandonment, isolation, and unrequited rewards.

  • Spiritual Application:This passage serves as a warning to the people of Israel, reminding them of the consequences of their unfaithfulness to God. It reveals the futility and emptiness of seeking satisfaction in worldly alliances and idolatry. The verse also carries broader spiritual lessons for believers today, cautioning against spiritual unfaithfulness and emphasising the importance of remaining loyal and devoted to God.
