Ezekiel 16:35

Listen to this article

“Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD.”

Context:In order to understand the significance of this verse, it is important to provide some context by looking at the preceding verses. The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and in chapter 16, the prophet Ezekiel delivers a message from God, using the metaphor of an unfaithful wife to describe the unfaithfulness of the people of Jerusalem and their idolatrous practices.

In Ezekiel 16:35, the word “harlot” is used to describe the faithlessness and idolatry of Jerusalem. The city, symbolically portrayed as a woman, is accused of engaging in immoral and unfaithful acts. This metaphor emphasizes the gravity of Jerusalem’s spiritual infidelity towards God.

By addressing Jerusalem as a harlot, God is highlighting the severity of the people’s sins. He is calling their attention to their unfaithfulness and urging them to listen to His word, which will convey His message of judgment and the consequences of their actions.

This verse serves as a reminder of God’s righteous judgment against unfaithfulness and disobedience. It emphasises the importance of heeding God’s word and repenting from sinful ways. It also carries a message of hope, as subsequent verses in the chapter express God’s desire to restore Jerusalem and establish a new covenant with His people.

Overall, Ezekiel 16:35 is a powerful admonition from God, calling Jerusalem to account for its unfaithfulness and urging them to listen to His message. It reminds us of the consequences of straying from God’s path and the importance of heeding His word.
